Ram Trucks Improve Tech to Improve Fuel Efficiency

Gas prices are always a concern whenever it comes to picking out a car. The recent roller-coaster trend that the gas prices have been going through is disconcerting to anyone. That price has been a major factor for anyone stepping into a dealership looking for a new or pre-owned car. For a truck driver, it has to be even more of a concern. Thankfully, while trucks have been traditionally seen as fuel hogs, Ram is making great endeavors to make their trucks even more fuel efficient.

The Chronicle Herald took a look at how each truck maker is handling this new demand from their customers in having fuel efficient trucks. Here’s the list of the methods Ram is taking to give their truck drivers the best possible and most fuel efficient trucks.

One type of technology is cylinder deactivation. In Ram trucks, this is known as the Multi-Displacement System. All that is fancy speak for making sure the truck isn’t using more cylinders than necessary. If only four cylinders are needed, then only four are used. When more force is required more of them will activate. This in turn helps to save fuel.

Next is the an eight speed transmission. Other truck builders use six-speed transmissions, but Ram is offering up eight on certain models. The benefits of this are “Key benefits to having more gears include low highway-cruising revs, improved refinement and enhanced power delivery.”

The last bit of tech being used in Ram trucks to help save you gas is “Variable Valve Timing.” This is a term that most muscle car drivers will know of. What this does is let the vehicle’s engine computer system control performance by opening up valves when needed. The system is constantly making sure fuel efficiency is being properly met.

Ram 1500 Tops Consumer Reports Full-Sized Pickup Test

Consumer Reports has put out their rankings of full-size picks up and the one that made it to the top of the list, the 2013 Ram 1500.

“The Ram 1500 is surprisingly luxurious and refined-but still fully capable of doing hard work when needed,” said Jake Fisher, director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Ct. “Continued interior and powertrain improvements make the Ram a particularly well-rounded choice.”

By heading over to their website, at ww.CosumerReports.org, they have the full break down of their test and ratings that led to the 1500 earning the top spot. The Ram 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8, a fan-favorite engine choice, was used in the testing.

The pick up managed a 78-point overall road test. To put some perspective on that number, here’s how the competition did. The Ford F-150 got 68 and the Toyota Tundra had a 69.

The 2013 Ram 1500 has been extremely popular with critics and fans of late. This is thanks to a lighter and stiffer frame than previous models. Including the new infotainment system on the inside to improve driver and passenger comfort certainly helped the scoring.

Consumer Report did mention that they are still waiting to test the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, so we’ll see if the 1500 can hold onto the crown afterward.

2013 Ram 1500 Express Black Edition: I See a Red Truck and I Wanted it Painted Black

Just last month, in conjunction with the blockbuster film, Ram put together a special Man of Steel-inspired Ram truck. A month later, Ram has a new look to give to the 1500 that’s dressed in all black. I’m not making any insinuations or anything, but General Zod, Man of Steel’s main bad guy, is also dressed in all black. Could Ram be secretly assembling a Justice League of trucks?

In all seriousness, Ram is putting out a pretty snazzy all-black 2013 Ram 1500. It has a real ‘bad-ass’ seal of approval and just looks like it can handle about anything. It’s the kind of look that both makes you gaze in wonderment, dreaming of getting a chance to be the cool guy behind the wheel, and also makes you too intimated to look into the eyes of the driver. I might be over-selling the melodrama, but it’s clearly there.

The all-black 1500 is black from head to toe, even have the side badge removed to cover the whole body. The grille is black, the front fascia is black, the rear bumper is black; when I say it’s all-black I really really mean that everything is painted black.

Why go all out on this color? “Ram Trucks are known for their bold, in-your-face presence,” said Ram president Reid Bigland. “The new Black Express takes Ram’s aggressive good looks to an all new sinister level by blackening out the entire truck while maintaining a great price.”

Now I just want to see the Black Express Ram and the Man of Steel Ram meet on a road somewhere. That’s be one epic clash.

Ram Heavy Duty Trucks Get New Hemi Engine

As the market has been showing, trucks are very important right now. Ram is really pushing to take away the sales market from the competition. In order to do that, they need to make sure people know they have the best trucks on the market. The critics have been extremely receptive to the 2014 Ram 1500 so far. The next group of trucks Ram is sprucing up is the Heavy Duty lineup. Ram will be giving the trucks a more heavy duty engine to make them the most powerful trucks in the class.

The 2014 Heavy Duty Trucks will now have the option of a 6.4-liter Hemi V8. The engine has only been used by SRT up until now. Torque News has the full numbers list of what this engine is capable of. “This new 6.4L truck Hemi packs 410 horsepower at 5,600rpm and 429lb-ft of torque at 4,000rpm…”

Those impressive numbers give the 2014 Ram HD Trucks the edge over the competition. Neither Ford nor GM has trucks that can match that much power.

Making the engine seem even better is the fact that it has Chrysler’s fuel saver technology. That makes the engine shut down half of its cylinders when it’s on the highway at cruising speeds. What this does is provide better fuel economy for truck drivers.

Ram is serious about becoming the name in trucks. They are seeing the importance of excelling in the market right now and are really appealing to those looking for power in their trucks.

2014 Ram 1500 Diesel Announced!

It was the worst-kept secret, but still something fans demanded. The 2014 model of the Ram 1500 will now be offered with a diesel engine!

The diesel engine that will be offered is the same that will be in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine. It’s rated at 240 HP and has 420 lb-ft of torque. According to Auto Evolution, the towing capabilities are comparable to the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 Ram and has improved fuel efficiency. The complete figures have not been fully revealed yet.

The pricing, however, has been shown. The EcoDiesel V6 will run an additional $2,850 to the 1500. The starting price of the 2014 Ram 1500 is $24,200.

For buyers not wanting diesel, the 1500 will still be available with the Pentastar V6 and 5.7 Hemi V8. All of the available engines will have eight-speed automatic transmission.

Ram Trucks Heats up the Commercial Truck Segment

Trucks have an odd dual life attached to them. Sure everyone likes to drive a car that looks good, but trucks need to be able to do their duty as a heavy duty mover. That’s what commercial vehicles are all about, trading in the frill and good looks for providing the highest quality performance. With the 2013 Ram 1500 being such a success with fans and critics, Ram is setting their sights on providing competition to Ford and General Motors with commercial vehicles.

Currently, both Ford and General Motors dominate in this field. They have almost 90 percent of the market with Ram picking up the rest. The economy is improving and companies are looking at their fleets in need of updating.

Ram is introducing a new commercial truck, a downsized cargo van based off the Fiat Doblo, later next year.

It’s clear for truck sellers that this will be a major market over the course of the next few years. Truck builders are certainly concentrating on providing solid competition amongst themselves. When that happens, the consumer wins.

Ram and Man of Steel Team-Up to Make a Superman-Worthy Truck

Opening this weekend is the hotly anticipated summer blockbuster Man of Steel. Expectations for Superman’s rebirth in cinema are running high and the fans are anxiously drooling for the moment to see the spectacle. Ram trucks have stepped up for cross-promotions with the movie and have delivered unto the people of Earth a vehicle that looks like a gift from the stars.

Seriously, this is one awesome looking truck. It looks ripped right from the pages of a comic book. I half expect for Clark Kent to shout “To the Super-mobile!”

Old school Superman fans may lament the duller gray that’s used instead of a brighter blue, but I think the Dark Ceramic Gray looks pretty powerful. That and I love the grill with the Superman “S” front and center and the mix of red.

Anyone that goes driving in this power wagon will definitely not be kneeling before anyone anytime soon.

Ram 1500 Named Automobile Magazine 2013 All-Star

Automobile Magazine just announced their All-Stars for 2013, and among their top-honored vehicles was the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn.

11 vehicles were named 2013 All-Stars and given distinctions like “Hometown Hero” or “Compact for America.” The Ram 1500 and the Audi A7 were designated as the “Houston Rockets.” Jason Harper, who wrote the section of the piece on the Ram 1500, had lots of praise for the truck, calling it “the ultimate in cowboy cool” and “king of the ranch.”

As they put both vehicles through their paces, the Ram 1500 easily beat out the Audi 7 for earning its keep. This is the type of vehicle that can haul more hay, bring back a runaway cow, and take out skeet shooting. Aside from its practicality, though, Harper was also surprised at the attention given to the interior, praising the stitching as “European quality” and noting the lack of “tawdry veneer” in the design.

2013 Ram 1500: Giving The Competition a Run for Their Money

It’s time for a good old fashion showdown between the most popular trucks on the market. New York Daily News took a look at the popular 2013 Ram 1500 and saw how it stacked up next to the competition. What was their conclusion? It was that Ford and Chevrolet better be worried.

The Ram truck is a staple of American engineering for heavy-duty trucks. The official origins for the Ram started around 1981, but the ram hood ornament has been a feature since the Great Depression. Since then, the Ram has undergone quite a number of since then and is now poised to really shake up the established thought when it comes to trucks.

The 2013 Ram 1500 especially is looking to combine refined luxury covering powerful capability. The redesign of Ram as the article puts it “attempts to innovate along with Chevy and Ford rather than follow while undercutting their prices.” While there is a sense of gimmick in some of the features, such as the sidewall storage compartments or the “Rambox”, but many others would be considered class leading, such as eight speed transmission and electrical steering.

Where the Ram 1500 really shines is the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine with eight speed automatic transmission. The transmission is 10 percent more fuel efficient than a six-speed and almost 15 percent more than five-speed.

For the pricing, it’s not hard to see it’s the choice for any driver looking for the best valued truck on the market.
