The move to diesel has been a popular one for Chrysler. The reason for adding on a diesel engine option was largely due to the demand from consumers. The addition seems to be paying off for Ram trucks as the demand seems to justify increasing the supply.
Chrysler has sent word to its supplier in Italy to send them more of the V-6 EcoDiesel engines. It seems that people are not just asking for Ram to provide a diesel option, they are actually buying them as well. It is refreshing to see that the consumer is wanting something and then going out and buying it rather than patting the company on the back and saying “well, thanks for doing that, I’ll think about getting it now.”
The diesel engine in the Ram full-sized pickups offers better towing and fuel economy than a gas engine. Diesel engines have been largely asked for in a Ram truck. It is the main reason why the company is putting them on the market, to finally stoke the fan fervor and see if that can translate to higher sales.
There’s a good reason why so many truck drivers have been asking for a diesel engine in a Ram for so long. One reason is the improved fuel economy. A diesel engine is capable of having 25 percent to 30 percent better fuel economy. However, that boost does come as a double-edged sword. While there might be a better fuel economy, diesel gas is more expensive than normal gas.
Ram hopes to remedy this problem by focusing on a smaller engine still capable of maintaining the efficiency without adding too much extra to the cost.
Drivers wanting diesel engines want more than just fuel costs though because that diesel also translate to work load. Towing especially can see a huge boost thanks to the new diesel engines.
When launching a new type of engine, there’s bound to be a lot of concerns. There is all kinds of issues that could pop up. But if the major concern is meeting with the demand, that’s a pretty positive one to have.
That is just what Ram is worried about with the upcoming release of the Eco Diesel engine for the 2014 Ram 1500. Ever since the truck company announced the engine back in June, they’ve been getting swamped with people wanting it.
Dave Sowers, Ram’s Marketing President, explained to Edmunds that they believed there would be a small portion of people interested, not the mass that came out following the announcement. That is making the truck company worry that they won’t be able to have the supply of the Eco Diesel engine keep up with the demand.
The Eco Diesel engine for the 2014 Ram 1500 is the first time a diesel engine has been placed in a light duty pickup. It’s something that fans have been clamoring for, hence the reason why there was so much excitement when Ram finally answered that call. Now they just to be able to find the capability to keep up with what the public wants.

As the market has been showing, trucks are very important right now. Ram is really pushing to take away the sales market from the competition. In order to do that, they need to make sure people know they have the best trucks on the market. The critics have been extremely receptive to the 2014 Ram 1500 so far. The next group of trucks Ram is sprucing up is the Heavy Duty lineup. Ram will be giving the trucks a more heavy duty engine to make them the most powerful trucks in the class.
The 2014 Heavy Duty Trucks will now have the option of a 6.4-liter Hemi V8. The engine has only been used by SRT up until now. Torque News has the full numbers list of what this engine is capable of. “This new 6.4L truck Hemi packs 410 horsepower at 5,600rpm and 429lb-ft of torque at 4,000rpm…”
Those impressive numbers give the 2014 Ram HD Trucks the edge over the competition. Neither Ford nor GM has trucks that can match that much power.
Making the engine seem even better is the fact that it has Chrysler’s fuel saver technology. That makes the engine shut down half of its cylinders when it’s on the highway at cruising speeds. What this does is provide better fuel economy for truck drivers.
Ram is serious about becoming the name in trucks. They are seeing the importance of excelling in the market right now and are really appealing to those looking for power in their trucks.
The 2014 Ram 1500 is making a big splash this year by being made available to purchase with a diesel engine. According to the Stltoday.com, it’s the “first modern-era half-ton to make available diesel power.”
Making the decision to offer this new engine was not a difficult one. Ram stated that trucks fans have been ‘emphatically asking for it.’
In order to offer a Ram truck with diesel, there will be a new engine, and one not from Cummins. It will be coming from VM Motori of Cento, which is an Italian company owned by Fiat. The 3.0-liter V-6 turbo diesel engine will be in the 2014 Ram 1500 and later made available for the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The actual specs of the Ram version have not been made available as of yet, but a comparison is drawn using the Grand Cherokee. In the Jeep vehicle, the engine is capable of 240 horsepower and 420 lb.ft of torque. The Ram specs should be revealed sometime this summer.
