How Does The 2016 Ram 1500 Compare to the Competition?

ram1500-exterior-front-end-bumper

How does the 2016 Ram 1500 stack up against the competition?  That’s a question that Slashgear wanted answered.  They compared the popular up-and-coming Ram truck to its 3 closest competitors to see where it was better and where it could use improvement.

The Ford F-150 has been the king of the truck segment for a long time now, but the Ram 1500 is starting to make gains as Ram continues to make quality trucks as well as push the knowledge of their capability out into the truck buying world.  A few years ago, no one would’ve thought that Ram would mount the kind of resurgence it has had.  So how does it compare to the competition?

First up is the previously state king; the Ford F-150.  This is the one to be better than to hope to claim the segment.  What the F-150 does better is that it has better towing.  It also offers more gas engine options and has a cheaper base model.  On the flip side, the 1500 has the EcoDiesel engine option, which rivals Ford’s EcoBoost engine in terms of fuel economy.  Ram also features the Uconnect system that is better than the Ford’s SYNC touchscreen system.  The final thing that the 1500 has that the F-150 does not is an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Next up is the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado.  The place where the Silverado offers competition to the 1500 is again in engine options.  It has more V8 engines.  That being said, the 1500 beats it in terms of value.  Six-speed automatic transmission is in the base 1500 with the eight-speed available as an option and standard on most of the models.  You don’t get that without paying a lot more on the Silverado.

Lastly is the 2016 GMC Sierra.  The Sierra is comparable to the 1500 in many of the same ways that the Silverado is.  The Sierra has more power in the engine options and driver safety features such as Driver Alert Seats.  The 1500 wins again with its transmission offerings.  The 1500 also has a better, and more comfortable, interior than the Sierra.

Is the Ram Dakota Making a Come Back?

2006-Dodge-Dakota-Truck-Image-003

Mike Manley, the head of Ram Trucks, had an interview with USA Today where he dropped a bit of a bombshell for truck lovers.  Here is the line that has many talking.

“You have the opportunity with a new frame for the next-generation Ram.  You have the opportunity to take a large SUV off of it because we already have a very, very capable frame today that is going to be upgraded.”

Auto Evolution latched onto this portion of the interview as a marker of what is to come from the future of Ram.  The future of the FCA has been an interesting one of late.  There have been some major course corrections due to the recent sales trends of Jeep and Ram.  FCA is putting a bigger focus on their SUV and crossover lines due to the uptick Jeep and Ram have been enjoying.

So is this a sign of what to expect from the 2018 Ram 1500?  The 1500 is due for an update according to the 5-year plan that FCA put out, even though much has changed recently so the plan isn’t being kept to exactly.

In other news from the interview, Manley also brought up bringing back the Dakota.  I could see Ram doing that.  For many of the brands, bringing back older and popular vehicles has gone over well enough.  The Chrysler Pacifica is popular so far and Jeep is bringing back the Wagoneer.  The Dakota could be the nostalgic strength for a new Ram Truck that capitalizes on the Ram sales.

New 2016 Ram 1500 Special Edition Announced: The Yellow Rose of Texas Special Edition

2016 Ram 1500 Yellow Rose of Texas

Ram has been the ‘Truck of Texas’ for a while now.  It makes sense that when it comes time to put together a custom truck, that the great state of Texas would be getting its own special edition.

Ram is introducing the Yellow Rose of Texas edition of the 2016 Ram 1500.  It has a Stinger Yellow paint color, not to confuse anyone by NOT having yellow paint to go with its name.  This special edition will be offered on the half-ton 4×2 and 4×4 crew cab versions of the Ram 1500 Lone Star.

The name Yellow Rose of Texas comes from a mid-19th century American folk song.  It was later covered by artist Mitch Miller and was a Billboard Number One hit in 1955.

“Texas is truck country – Ram Truck country – and we’re committed to building products that resonate with our customers,” said Mike Manley, the head of Ram Brand.  “The importance of the Texas truck market cannot be overstated.  That’s why the Ram Truck brand has worked year after year to deliver hard-working trucks that serve the communities across the Lone Star state.”

Texas and Ram trucks have a long history together.  It’s hard not to see Texas as a primary region for trucks.  This is also not the first time that Ram has put together a special edition truck in honor of Texas.  In 2014, they collaborated with the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum with a Ram Texas Ranger concept car.  They’ve also provided much needed aid to residents hit by floods in 2015.

Ram is giving 70 of their commercial fans to the event. The trucks will be working hard to give the people of New York a show. Over 50 million viewers, with 3.5 million lining the street, are expected to be watching. The task of making sure the floats get where they need to go, that goes to Ram trucks.

Ram Places 2 Trucks on the Fastest Selling Trucks of September

2015 Ram 2500 - RamDealerNY - 06

September was a good month overall for Fiat-Chrysler.  So many vehicles in various brands did extremely well.  Jeep and Dodge set numerous sales records and helped propel the company to have one great September.  One of the other places where the auto maker did so well was in the truck segment.  Ram trucks continued to have an increase of sales, in so much that two trucks were some of the fastest selling in September.

PickupTrucks.com highlights the ten fastest and slowest pickups sold in the month of September.  The way to find out which truck is the fastest is done by seeing the supply of the truck.  If a pickup has less than a 30-day supply, which means it’s on the fastest list.  Without further suspense, the trucks in question were the 2016 Ram 1500 and Ram 2500.

The 2016 Ram 1500 has been one of the more popular trucks being produced at the moment and has been making a slow and steady march to being one of the dominant forces in its segment.  It has been continuously awarded by numerous critics and drivers are catching on to why.  As for the 2500, it was the only heavy-duty model to break into the top 10.

The ProMaster serious of commercial trucks also had great sales.  Their sales were up 4 percent, making it the brand’s best September since 1996.

Ram Trucks Donates to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum

Ram Texas Ranger - RamDealerNY

Ram trucks have always been supporters of the Texas Rangers.  They’ve put out models of the 1500 that has honored the Rangers.  They plan to continue their support by donating $100,000 to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum.

This donation is happening almost a year since they last partnered with the Texas Rangers and also donated $100,000 to help the legendary law enforcers.

“Texas Rangers epitomize all of the great qualities of the Lone Star State,” said Beck Blanchard, Director of Ram Truck Brand.  “Ram has deep ties to Texas.  Reinforcing Ram’s commitment to the Texas Ranger Division and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum is a significant way to be engaged with the people and communities in which we do business.”

The money being donated will go to help make improvements at the museum.  A portion of the donation will also goto the Texas Ranger Association Foundation’s scholarship program.

Ram Extends Partnership With Easton Corbin

Easton Corbin Country Music - RamDealerNy Bayside Chrysler Jeep Dodge

Ram has been having a lot of luck with their country stars.  The recent partnership with Miranda Lambert has delivered a smash hit with her song “Roots and Wings.”  It’s clear they’ve found an audience for their trucks and it is in the form of a country audience.  It doesn’t come as any surprise that Ram is extending their partnership with country star Easton Corbin.

Easton and Ram have been collaborating since 2012.  This extension of their relationship is going to produce a whole new song titled “Let’s Ride.”  Like Lambert’s “Roots and Wings” the song is inspired by Ram trucks.  The song will be featured across a slew of media spectrums, from commercials to its own music video.

“We continue to look for unique ways to creatively show how Ram trucks are an integral part of our culture and the everyday lives of our customers,” said Oliver Francois, Chief Marketing Officer of FCA.  “It is rewarding to know that Easton, one of the hottest young artists in country music today, wrote the song inspired by his ongoing experiences behind the wheel of our Ram trucks.”

The music video of “Let’s Ride” will be available on YouTube and other digital services.

Ram Files Patent for Retractable Ramps for Truck Beds

ram1500-exterior-truckbed

A new patent filing by Fiat Chrysler USA may point to Ram trucks getting retractable ramps for the truck bed.

Allpar, being the ever vigilant Chrysler watchers they are, caught a hit today when they came across a patent filling.  The patent is for “ramps that slides into the bed and tailgate for storage.”  If what the patent drawings are showing is true, then Ram owners will possibly be getting an easier way to get heavy objects in and out of their truck beds.

The drawing shows a very simple concept, to have retractable ramps that sit right below the surface of the truck bed and can then be brought out.  I do not doubt that Ram would love to have this be standard issue on all their trucks.  One look at it and it is easy to see the accessibility it provides and how much of a boon it would be to truck owners who need to get something heavy loaded quickly.

While it is an easy thing to make on paper, retractable ramps like this may not be as easily produced.  It is certainly an idea that Ram has had in the past, as Allpar states, but the problem seems to be in being able to make the ramps durable enough to do their job.  This is something that either Ram has overcome and they are staking their claim on it, or they just want to have it available to them to use in the future.  Here’s hoping that they have something in place and ready to go.

Watch How the Ram Rebel Got its New Front Grille

Ram Rebel - RamDealerNY Bayside Chrysler Jeep Dodge

What is more of a summer thought than that of grilling up dinner?  Ram has released a new video of them talking about grilling, only in this case, it’s the kind that is at the front of the truck.

The Ram Rebel is the newest Ram truck and one of the most noticeable things off the bat is that Ram has a beefy new front grille for it.  In the newly released video, engineers at Ram are interviewed on the history of the Ram grille.  While the grille is certainly iconic now, it wasn’t that major back then.  A Ram truck’s grille was changed every two to three years and it was usually just the insert or the headlights that changed.

In 1994, Ram introduced the grille as we know it today.  It was a shoot in the arm for the truck market and gave Ram trucks a unique look with the crosshair design.

Ram challenged their engineers and designers to shake up the front grille for the new Rebel.  To get to the end result that we see now, they thought of what was going on today.  Michael Gillam, Senior Creative Designer at Ram Truck Studios, points to the recent beard craze that got them thinking of what a beard would look like on a truck.  Now that you know that, it’s impossible to unsee it on the Rebel.

It’s a great watch to see how the Rebel and the updated grille came to be as well as a brief history lesson on Ram trucks.  Check it out here:
