New York Auto Show: 2013 Ram 1500 Brings “Guts and Glory”

At the New York International Auto Show, the 2013 Ram 1500 promised to bring “the guts and the glory,” and they delivered on both fronts with a redesigned 1500 that still has that undeniable Ram signature look.

At the presentation, Ram focused on the notion of going back to the core of the car and beefing up the truck’s “guts” to make a stronger vehicle from the inside-out. What they didn’t mention in the presentation but have advertised elsewhere was that their inside-out approach has made the 1500 more fuel efficient. Supposedly the 2013 Ram 1500 has the best mileage of any full-size pickup truck with a V-6 or V-8 engine.

Another great feature that did not get shown off at the presentation was the truck’s new shifting system. Instead of using a traditional gear shift with automatic transmission trucks, the 2013 Ram 1500 has a shifter knob. The new shifter knob lets people shift from park to reverse, neutral, or drive with the turn of a knob located to the right of the starter. Wired was so impressed with the shifter knob that they gave it a spot on their list Top Ten Biggest Innovations of the New York Auto Show.

While it might seem strange that the higher fuel efficiency and new shifter knob didn’t get featured in the presentation, I think it shows how great the new 2013 Ram 1500 really is. There was so much they wanted to show off about the vehicle that they couldn’t fit it all into a short presentation. The 2013 Ram 1500 won’t go on sale until September, but I predict that Ram 1500 fans will love the merging of new technology with classic style.

Ram Cargo Van

The Ram Cargo Van has been built to meet the needs of anyone who needs room. Ram wants to convince you that having a van for a business vehicle shouldn’t be impractical. If you have a business that demands large quantities of a good to be transported throughout the boroughs, be it from Queens to Staten Island, but don’t want to trouble yourself with a traditional panel van, this is the ride for you. Built specifically for easy access and efficiency all while allowing for maximum cargo capacity. It gives three easy ways of getting to your cargo with the manual dual sliding rear doors and a read lift gate. With the sliding doors, that means if you are forced to park in a place that doesn’t allow for easy access to the rear lift gate (and being in New York, that happens frequently) you can still get to what you need. The lift gate lifts high, making it very easy to get what you need without worrying about bonking your head. It’s also illuminated. To help ensure ease and safety for you, the rear lift gate has gas props that hold it firmly in place and is closed with fingertip ease.

For a vehicle like this, Ram understands that in order to stand out to the customer, that it’s all about cargo size. That’s why the Ram Cargo Van comes with space of 144.4 cubic feet. That’s got it’s competitor the Ford Transit Connect, which has 129.6 cubic feet, by almost 15 cubic feet. It also beats Ford in the area of cargo load floor area by 12 square feet, the Ram C/V having 42.6 while Ford only has 30.1. To help make sure that the vehicle matches the workload, there are plenty of options available to tailor make it to suiting your needs. One such accessories is the Mopar cargo wall that sits behind the seats to protect against any shifting the cargo may do. Another is an optional flat floor complete with storage bins for more room without losing floor space. There’s even a removable multipurpose roof rack kit.

With all this effort put into maintaining such a spacious ride, it’s a good thing to know that Ram didn’t spare any expense to make sure the driver and a passenger still get to enjoy a comfortable ride. Soft touch material is all around the cabin giving a nice feeling to anyone stuck behind the wheel during a downtown rush hour. The steering wheel is leather wrapped and comes complete with audio controls. It also features standard tilt and telescoping steering column. Storage extends to the here as well, with an open bin in the lower instrument panel and a dual glove-box. To almost an absurd degree at this point, there’s even an overhead console with cargo compartment mirror. The Ram C/V wants to ensure that while you have everything you need under one roof, it doesn’t leave you feeling like there’s no room for the driver.

The engine pumping life into into the Cargo Van is a 3.6 liter with 283 horsepower with multi speed automatic transmission. For the fuel economy, the Cargo Van has the Best-In-Class range of 500 miles. That means should your business duties take you into Manhattan, then you’ll be getting 17 miles per gallon in the city and if that same trip takes you out onto the highway then you’ll be getting 25 miles per gallon on that extended trip. This is all done with a 20 gallon tank.

Ram also makes sure that you are just as protected as any cargo riding behind you. With a unitized steel construction in all the body panels, the Ram C/V is a durable beast that gives all the strength and protection of a panel van but still manages utility. For the driver and passenger, the C/V has multistage airbags that have three different speeds of deployment dependent upon the impact. There’s also supplemental side curtain airbags that work for every row. There is also an available rear back up camera to help you park in those tighter situations and help hooking up a trailer.
